Making a Music Video: Awake My Soul

Well, here's what I was working on: an unofficial music video for Awake My Soul by Mumford and Sons. Now like always, allow me to guide you through the process.*

*I actually joined this group when they were almost done with Pre-Production. So I'll guide you through the process to the best of my knowledge.

Pre-Production

Let me start with the little story on why I was late to join, just for an explanation. In short, we split into groups on the first day. I ended up in a dyad. We waited for everyone to declare their groups so we could be split up, but got bored waiting and ended up conceiving a music video for The Middle by Jimmy Eat World (which we might still make on our own time). The teacher is gone the next day, so we dive into Pre-production. We continued to work on it. However, we decide the timeframe compared to the workload is a bit too much for two people, and split up near the end of the Pre days.

So I leap into a group who plans to start Production in 3 days. It was a little abrupt, but they taught me the concept and got me on my feet to make this in that time. We made a music video for Awake My Soul by Mumford and Sons. Our concept, in essence, is a look at grief. A man loses his wife and goes through depression, yet in the end, learns to live on. We wanted it to be meaningful and inspirational.

We chose our actor: our cinematographer's dad, who is a really good actor. Our set would be her house, a little local pond, and a graveyard. So, we were ready to film.

Production

I only made one filming day because I had to work the other. But when I was there, we filmed the lake, dinner, and driving shots. Since I jumped in last minute, there wasn't much I could do other than be a production assistant. In other words, odd jobs. Since the production was pretty small, there wasn't that many odd jobs though. So I mainly made suggestions about shots, props, and kept an eye out for continuity.

Post-Production

I checked in often with our editors over the process of Post to see how it was coming along. We like to keep things open to suggestions, so sometimes I see something I like and compliment it, or point out something else and question it. It's great for everyone, not just the editors, to put together the film in Post.

In Conclusion

Not much to say. Like I've probably implied, I wasn't there for most of the process; I just observed. I hope to be more involved for the next project.

I really like how it turned out though. Props to the cast and rest of the crew for putting this together. Sorry this post is very late, I can't really say anything else other than I forgot. Here it is though, right before I write a post for making a short film. Until next time!
